I get different stories from 2 JD dealer salesmen about
capabilities of this unit. With the rough cut mower rated for 2"
stuff, what sort of heavy brush can I cut? Can I cut it to ground
level or can I turn the blades around so I shatter stuff instead of
make spikes? Also I need to use if for snow removal. One
dealer strongly advises a block heater. Also does anyone have
experience with the 7 foot x 22" power angle snow plow blade
which goes on the front on the loader frame? Sounds great to
me because I could use the plow but switch to the loader when I
have to make more room for plowing, but it is an awfully long
way out in front of the tractor. I believe I can cut the ROPS and
fix things so I can reattach the pieces when I want to. I'd like
shuttleshift but the 5105 is too much more money for me.

Also of course is the basic 990 a good troublefree unit which will
have the traditional Deere high resale value or is it something to
avoid?

I have a JD 5105, and am very happy with it. It replaced a Ford 3000 diesel. The John Deere is a better tractor though the Ford was a tough little critter. I use my 5105 to round bale hay with a NH 845 round baler. I pull an 8 foot pull type Bush Hog. I use a 7 foot NH sickle bar mower to cut hay, and a 7 foot rear blade to clear snow. This tractor does everything I ask of it, and it is a sweet machine. You can't go wrong with it.

Thanks all. I am getting a 990 (ag tires) instead of a 5105 for the lower price and lower profile, as I need to get under trees, and not tip on side hills. Am also getting a rear blower, front loader, and 6' rough cutter. Now I just have to sell my 8N with 2 bottom plow, front snow blade, front dozer blade, and my MowChief.

'Cutting the ROPS' turns into a long discussion around here most of the time, but it is a real can of worms when it comes to reselling the tractor - you take on the liability if some nitwit hurts himself with the tractor. I'd give it thought anyhow.

790 AND 990 ARE VERY TROUBLE FREE AND RETAIN GOOD RESALE VALUE. THE 5105 IS MORE TRACTOR BUT IS PROBABLY 3 T0 4000 MORE WITH LOADERS. BOTH GOOD CHOICES JUST MAKES A DIFFERENCE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO AND WHAT YOUR POCKET BOOK SAYS. THE SNOW BLADE OUT FRONT ON THE LOADER PUTS MORE STRESS ON THE LOADER ARMS SO I DON'T THINK THAT IS A GOOD IDEA. KEEP RPM'S UP AND GROUND SPEED DOWN AND A MX5 ON A 990 WILL WORK FINE. DON.T CUT ROPS IF YOUR WORRIED ABOUT RESALE OR SAFETY. REMEMBER THE 05'S ARE ONLY SYCRONIZED BETWEEN REVERSE AND FIRST. GO WITH BLOCK HEATER.

i found that MOST sales people will tell you anything you want to hear to make a sale. i don't have any experience with the JD990, but if it is anything like the small JD870 (28 hp) then it is a real gem. i work my tractor on everthing from 5' bush hog to moving round bales with either the loader of the rear spike. only thing i don't/can/t do is run a baler. i understand the 990 is about 40 hp, but it is a Yanmar made machine. the JD 5105 is more money, but a lot more tractor also. a complete world of difference. try to arrange a farm test for the models from your dealer and compare for yourself.

A block heater is a good idea for any engine at freezing temps or lower. No matter if it start without pre-heating.
The 990 is built by Yanamr to JD's specs. It's beefier than a regular Yanmar of the same HP.
Cutting the rops? Don't go there.
Resale of the JD will top every other make of the same age & HP in the years to come.
Around here the 5105 and 950 are pretty close in price.
Get a M4WD or don't bother buying anything.
I've found bush hogs not limited by power but by ground travel speed on how clean they will cut.
