If you changed tire size on the front or rear, this will change the wheel speed. This may cause the wheel hop. In soft ground you probable would not notice it but on hard ground you would. Follow Ups:

Hi Pat, Medfarm in 100 percent correct. I work in a dealedship, and when under a hard pull, you should be able to see the front tires scratching a little as you go. You don't say what you are pulling, but a place to start would be a weight ratio of 70/30 to 60/40, depending on the equipment being pull type or mounted, and the amount of draft. Company reps. will tell you its a Mechanical Front Wheel Assist, not a four wheel drive. Good luck Follow Ups:

Pat, check out this page in the Firestone tire book. It tells a lot about wheel hop. http://www.firestoneag.com/tiredata/info/info_hop_1.asp JerryG Follow Ups:

Re: 1066 fwd wheel hop in reply to Pat H, 07-13-2000 21:09:35

Pat Let me start by saying that I have a 2wd 1566 with the 43 gallon fuel tank which will last 6 hours before running out of fuel in the middle of the field. On a older JD, I had a similar problem. I was able to partially solve this wheel hop problem by removing some of the weight on the front end. I believe that you are maxed out on the draft. The front end hop will go away if the front wheels can slip. The rear wheels will also slip but the tractor is designed to operate with 10% slip on the rear wheels. The front wheel drive is only intended to assist in pulling. If you are using a mounted implement such as a chiesel or ripper shanks, try to increase the draft control to reduce the pull. I realize that you may not accomplish your tillage needs but the front end hop will go away. Your tractor may not have a differential lock which would reduce the load on the front drive train. My 1566 with duals does not have a lock-up rear end. Good luck.Ray Follow Ups:

I just recently purchased a 1566 IH and I was baffled when I could not find the Differential lock. Does it not have a differential lock?.... and if not, why?.....What are the good and bad effects of running duals (strength, rollover..etc.) I am not tractor savvy but very interested in learning about these great machinesPlease e-mail me when any comments at Taylorweevil@yahoo.com.

the problem is the hard ground, your tractor tires arnt able to dig for maxinum traction, the solution is softer ground, one thing u might try is to reduce front end weight and run your tires with less weight and lower tire pressure
