On every job site I see, all the guys have the doors and windows open. They got brand new Cat and John Deere backhoes and excavators, and still have the doors open. Do they not have air conditioning?

the doors area a pain. Plus a lot of times we need to communicate with the guy in the hole or on the ground and the closed doors dont help, The cabs are pretty small and it is nice to run an excavator with the glass up and the door open, alot of the newer machines are quieter now so we can do this, it is also a force of habit. Most older operators are used to the doors open so they can hear their engines running, as well as a lot of operators who do their own repairs, the sound of the engine is one of the best diagnostic tools to a mechanic. all in all, we just like the fresh air I guess. Most newer machines come with A/C

The vast majority of construction equipment I see is NOT equipped with A/C even where it was offered as an option. I suppose this is because most folks writing the checks for the iron aren't in the seat. The only TLB's our store has sold with air have gone to owner-operators.

they smell real bad?.....often the jump in and out of the cab that much, the door is just a pain

....depending on the age, i think most come with air con (newer ones)

there is a dairy farmer down the road who has taken the door and rear window off his tractor for that reason (JD 2450)

i recon the smelling bad theory is not a bad one!
