I have a 1086, good tractor, real workhorse. Cant start using the key on the ignition switch. Can start the tractor using a screwdriver to jump it but that is getting old.Replaced solenoid, can here it clicking now when you turn the key, repaired a severed wire but still when you turn the key nothing. Does any one have any suggestions?

Make sure that your battery terminals are clean and tight and that your starter cables don"t have internal corrosion either within the battery terminal connector or with in the lug end that attaches to the solenoid or the starter. Make sure the starter is well grounded.

To check the starter(if it doesn"t have a solenoid mounted on the starter), connect a cable from the positive (12V negative grnd system) to the starter lug directly. if it turns the starter is good. if it doesn"t you"ve found the problem.

Check your safety start switch on the firewall, or if new enough will also have a safety start switch under seat on park linkage. As long as one is good it should start.
