"Turning up the pump" will increase the horsepower on a diesel engine but it will also increase the max pressures and temperatures. That means the internal loads will increase and the cooling loads will increase. If the engine is designed to take these increased loads and tempertures and the lower powered versions of the engines all use the same high power components, all that will happen is that engine life, when run at high powers, will be less then that of a derated engine. However, if the derated engines use lower cooling flows, less piston crown cooling oil flow, different materials, etc, turning up the wick can lead to premature failures. The folks that designed your engine are the ones who need to answer the question you are asking. |

| Hi Jerry, thanks for the information. I am aware of what too much will do. I am not trying to make a smoker/puller just trying to get a bit more power. It is done all the time with cars,trucks,and tractors. One thing I am going to add is the tack on this tractor shows that the rpms are down according to what I remember... the needle never gets farther than halfway into the PTO yellow range at wide open throttle with no load, I don't recall what the rpm's are right off hand but I do know that every one of our other red tractors will go past the PTO range a few hundred rpm's. |

| | I"m sure someone with some direct experience on this engine could give you some specific advice on what its weaknesses are if you want to uprate the engine. My point was just to be careful when you turn a pump up and to expect more wear and tear on the engine if you use the increased power a lot. You might consider changing the oil more often and don"t let the air filters get too dirty, etc. to reduce some risk. From an engine life viewpoint, it"s better to buy a big engine and run with some derate than to take a small engine and uprate it. |

| As far as a 436 is concerned, I'd be a whole lot more concerned with the durability of the components bolted behind it, and the ability of the cooling system to keep up with the added demand. The IH 400 series engines themselves will stand up to a bunch of fuel if kept reasonably cool. |

| | I'd agree with that too. I've got mroe experience with 466's but I'd think the idea about the same. There's a lot of room there to give them some twist... if, as you say, they are kept cool and the rest of the trap doesn't go to pieces. Using some common sense in how that power is applied will be as big a factor as any. I'd also install a pyrometer and keep an eye on that fairly closely. Rod |
