Hi Guys, I have to dismantle my Vicon 281 Discbine. The cutterhead is leaking gear oil through the seal. Is this a good place to start asking questions or can anyone suggest a better forum? Thanks Donnie |

You cannot torque too much, the nuts are the press in type. Just make sure your surfaces are clean using brake cleaner or something that takes the oil away from the surfaces.

It's a good place to start, there is also the implement forum. We redid our cutterbar on our 281 a couble years ago. Where is yours leaking? At the shafts seals or at the split? You might just have to much oil in it...You need to tilt it toward the hitch side when verifying the level.

It's leaking pretty bad at the split. I have to add gear oil every couple hours of use or it will go dry. I knew this when I bought it used, but the price was right. Do I need a factory gasket or can I make one from gasket stock? How about the silicon type? Thanks Donnie

Hi Marty Thanks for the replies. I spoke to the dealer today. He recomended Loc-Tite 518 silicon. Can you describe the process you used to get a good seal. Did you tork the nuts to a specific pressure? How much silicon? etc. Thanks Donnie

for sealing the 2 case halves, use the product you have been recommended, is an excellent product, good quality clear or black silicone works as well, be sure to check for any cracked welds, particularily if leaking near the "dog leg" pull the cutter bar and lay it across a couple 45gallon barrels to work on is the simplest - naturally, check all the bearings and gears over carefully when it is apart, clean the surfaces of all old gasket material ( wire wheel or 3M pad works well), brake cleaner works excellent to remove the last oily film, and use a bead between 1/8 to 1/4 of the gasket goop, going around the bolt holes to the inside of them, when is all laid down, just run your finger across the gasket maker to spread it out a small amount, and to make sure you have a continuous line with no air pockets, put together and tighten, a drop of blue loctite on bolt threads if you want, and just tighten like any other bolt that size, no gorilla arms required, good luck, that 3 blade system is still the one to beat
