[Return to Forum] Author [expand] [Modern View] Mn Dave 06-20-2009 05:22:34 98.132.225.142 20601 Report to Moderator Considering powering up to a little bigger tractor and was wondering about the Ford TW 35 or 8830 mfwd with 170 engine hp. How are the engines, transmissions, do they have wet or dry clutches, does the TW 35 have the same tranny as the 8830? I used it mainly for planting, but I also have done some heavy tillage. I put a little over 100hrs. on it so far , ana am quite happy with it. The only problem I had was the fan clutch had to be replaced. I was also looking at a Genisis model, but the 8830 was less than 1/2 the price, and I was able to get a 540 pto on it. The series II TWs were pretty much the same tractor, just you couldn"t get the Power Shift. Turbocharged and intercooled. The dual power has been solid on all of our ford's. We have a 9000, 8700, and a TW30. The PTO break band is a weak link as well as the PTO drive spline on the flywheel. Idle the tractor down before turning off the PTO will prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the PTO break band. Engines are decent but probably near the top of their power range. The TW will have a dry main clutch with a crashbox and dual power (wet clutches). The 8830 may have that same basic transmission OR a full Funk built powershift transmission. That would be fully wet clutches. PTO's are also wet... Both decent tractors for their day, but depending on what money you have to spend you might also look at a Genesis model like the 87 or 8870... but I think you also get into the big 1000 shaft on both of them. Beyond that, Genesis is a lot more tractor for the same power spec...
