I"m just getting underway with repairing my ta in the 986. I"m reading ahead and the book says "Install pto 89-526-8 gear locators". What is this and do i need it?

You don"t necessarly need to use the gear locators for the Hydrualic and PTO drive shaft gear.
The MCV needs to come off and have new springs and orings installed which will allow you to realign the gear in question on reinstallation. I definately would go with an Allied TA and they also have the MCV rebuild kit. The kit includes a good rebuild procedure sheet, pretty easy to follow.
Also necessary is to replace the pump which is mounted to the back side of the MCV. I just completed a complete rebuild of a trans, TA, and changing the reverse driven gear on a 1086. If you have questions please email, maybe I can help.
