need to get it apart. anybody 'round here done that? has a set screw and ring with notch. removed set screw, and tapped ring loose. won't budge. nothing else obvious to do, no flats, notches, screws. just the end of the cylinder and some now bare threads.has been suggested that i reinstall ring/screw and see if the whole threaded part will release. don't want to shear the screw but that's what i'm about to do. google has not been helpful. thanks.

| These are a pig to do. Undo the ring nut. Carefully tap the treaded part INTO the cylinder. Flick out the retaining ring. Pull, or using compressed air, blow the piston and gland out of the cylinder. You will be cursing it but that is how they come apart. Seals are standard sizes, we just go to a firm in Christchurch (I am in New Zealand) and they get the sizes off the old seals and match them up as genuine Deutz parts are expensive.

| | thanks. i just removed the entire unit to take to the hydraulic fixit place. makes sense, but couldn't see the retainer. if they don't have time to do it. i may secure the parts and doitmyself. it's a 65-mile one way trip and i do not care to do it twice. thanks again. wade

| Yes, the retainer ring is very difficult to see, and thre is hardly enough space to get it out, it would be better if the threaded gland would knock further in to the cylinder. Reassembly is not as difficult, because when the cylinder is apart you can get all the crud and rust out of there that builds up where the retainer ring sits in the cylinder bore, and just flick the ring back in and a couple of knocks with a flat screwdriver with the palm of your hand will seat it back in its grove. The job will be very near impossible on the tractor, you need to get the ram in a bench vice so it its held firmly and you can see it better.
