Disconnect wire from sender then ground wire to frame and see if gauge moves.

Might just flash it as some gauges need some resistance in series or they will over current, peg and damage the meter. Most I have known needed at least 35 ohms and max resistance was like 250 ohms on a 12v system.

My thought is that your resistor in your tank opened up. Over time the wiper on the sending unit that rides up and down over the coil of resistance wire will either wear the wire in two or wear the end off the wiper. Once open, the gauge has no current through it and whether it reads F or E depends upon how your particular gauge is wired. I had the problem on one of my Deeres, 4010, 4020, or 4230.
