I need help removing a starter on a 601 Workmaster tractor. I know very little about repairing a tractor. It appears that the starter is attached to a gear wheel of some sort. Do the two pieces separate or stay attached. If they stay attached I cannot get them out of the gear opening. Does the oil filter need to come off. I am totally lost. Thanks for your time and advice.

The starter comes out as one unit. It has the gear drive on the end of the shaft which needs to be moved out past the ring gear to be removed. If you go to messicks-dot-com, search for the 601 under the New Holland parts section, there's a "starter" link there, that'll show you what the starter assembly looks like once removed.

Can't say about the oil filter, I don't remember.

Yes on the filter on my 2000 which is a blue 600 series. 3 bolts to get at. Takes a little wiggling to get out as stated.
