Like Jim said, could be any of the number of bearings/bushings in the trans, they are after all a collar shifted constant mesh trans.

Just from a dianostic point does it make more/less noise in any one gear than the others?

I don't think it is particular to any gear. The noise can show up in all of the low range gears when pulling in the field.
