Had alternator checked out at a shop they said it was good. Took out the voltage regulator they said it was bad so got new one. Installed new regulator but it still doesnt charge but now the red light on dash is lit up. Are there any resistors or fusible links that could be bad in the charing curcuit. Any help would be appreciated.

Check for 12 volts on small wire on alt that's intended to excite the alt.

hi jim I checked for 12volts on small black wire
on alternator. theres no 12volts. traced wire back
to voltage reg and 12volts was coming in to
regulator from ign switch but not cominng out on
black wire to alt. had continuity on small black
wire to alternator. does this mean voltage
regulator is bad?

Appreciate your help on this. Im not sure what could have ruined the new voltage regulator because it only has a 4 prong connector, and you just plug it in.Unless there is a problem in the alternator. The shop we got the regulator from can check the regulator and the alternator together if we take them in to the shop. We will have to do that. Thanks again for your help. We could be getting back to you though. Sometimes these shops can give a guy the run around.
