Does anyone out there have a jd 5105 diesel or similar tractor? Having a hard time trying to start engine when it gets in the 30's and colder temps. The engine has a preheater and does work. Tractor starts fine in warm weather. Thanks Larry

Check also to see if you have a cold start advance and if it is working. I"m not familiar with this specific tractor, but have a 5055d and have worked with a ton of 3029 engines on generators. There is a two wire harness that would run from the thermostat housing (sensor) to the fuel pump.

The cold start advance changes the timing on start-up to make it easier (and less smokey) on starting in cold weather.

Colder than 32 deg F and I think you need a block heater, though the engine will start, but doesn"t like it much.

Good luck,
Bill

The three things that work against you in cold weather is that the oil viscosity is higher which increases the power required to turn the engine over, the temperature of the compressed air in the cylinder is lower making ignition a little tougher and your battery output decreases with temperature.

Block heaters can help with the first issue and a little on the second, a Thermostart unit can help with the second, and a well charged battery and/or a battery heater can help with the third issue.
Personally our diesels have a block heater and Thermostart and I haven"t found a need for a battery heater - yet.
