A friend asked me to post this question. His Deere 8970 4WD has an electronic 855 Cummins that falls flat on it's face after it is good and warmed up. Something in the electronics is acting up to cause this and the way it sounds he isn't the only owner to have this problem. He saw on another website a person can change this engine's injection pump back to manual controls to end the problem. He mentioned it has been done on a CIH 4WD with this same engine setup. Have any of you guys heard anything about this? He said a contributor on the other web site has converted six or seven of these tractors with this engine. I'm trying to get logged on to that other website to try to get some information on it but my new username and password haven't gone through yet.

The 'Cummin's/Deere' engine wiring harness on these Deeres can be a problem...also some of these(8960/8970) had a decelerator switch in the cab on the floor...plus a throttle limit control...and a electric throttle-lever plus JD wiring between all those components and the Century system engine controls and engine harness.....

Odds are it's the engine harness or connections there-of...but I have seen stuck decelerator pedals(lunch-box on pedal)...wire-chaffing to the decel-pedal(under floor mat)...CB radios lashed into the console wiring by bubba killing the throttle...etc....

Usually it ain't the big expensive hard-parts on these...but also expensive wiring harness issues. A good Cummin's service tech should be able to pin-point the issue with minimal fuss.

I helped a fellow this spring repair an Agco 4 wheel drive with the same trouble on the electronic N 14 he had. Repaired a variable speed Cummins PT pump and replaced the original, added a hand throttle cable and did away with the electronic controls.
