Am shopping for and will be purchasing new compact utility tractor this spring for land mngt., bush hogging, stone wall loader work on farm property I've purchased. I've noticed some come packaged with category 1 hitches. Others have category 2. What are the pros and cons or difference between them? Are they convertible? Thanks. Follow Ups: |

| Robert, There is no real "advantage" of Cat I vs. Cat II. Cat II implements will be found on about 55 to 60 horsepower tractors and above, more or less. A compact tractor will probably have CAT I 3-point. These implements are the size this tractor is designed to use. Whatever size the tractor comes with is what it is designed to have, if that makes since. Same with Cat II tractors and implements. There are shims/inserts available to use CatI implements with Cat II tractors.Post-hole diggers are the ones most people use the shims for. Cat I implements have a toplink pin size of 3/4 inch and bottom pins are 7/8 inch. CatII implements have a toplink pin size of 1 inch and bottom pins are 1-1/8 inch. I hope this helps, Donald M.Cosper www.CosperTractor.com Follow Ups: |

| Check also to see if the arms can be flipped aroundon the tractors. I have a Case IH 385 that has category 1, but if you flip the arms around, they are category 2. Meaning, where it attaches to the tractor is cat 2, till you flip 'em around. Generally though, I don't flop them, I'll just use a bigger tractor. I don't know if any manufactuer makes them like this or not anymore, when you flipped it to cat 2, it wasn't as strong as a true cat 2, cause the arms were still cat 1 strength, just cat 2 holes. Just made for occasional use. hope this helps Follow Ups: |

| Cat II hitches are found on heavier higher horsepower tractors. Some small compacts have a Cat 0 hitch system. Yes you can use Cat I implements on a Cat II tractor if you use bushings. But you must be careful, because Cat I implements are built lighter duty than Cat II and you can easily tear them up with a higher horsepower tractor. They can be bought at Tractor Supply and probably implement dealerships. You would probably be better off with a Cat I system as implements are much more plentiful and reasonable to purchase.
