I know this is a tractor decesion but I going to post it anyways. I have an old in the 80's 10 h.p blower and I just put in a carb kit and it still back fires when it's going. I don't have the stock muffle on it and was wondering if there wasn't enough back pressure? It just a cheap universal one I pick up at the hardware store.

Over on Yahoo there is a small engine message board that might help you. Good Luck! :)

my experience with backfire has always been directly related to timing. you may want to check your points?...and or the gap between the flywheel and the coil...I can't remember the exact figure...but an old timer once told me the thickness of a piece card stock or a note card works also...

good luck!
