A friend of mine just bought a '96 Ford 1620, 4 wd,3 cyl. diesel with 450 hrs. The tractor cranks way too many times to start...about 10-15 seconds & takes 2 to 3 attempts. Once started & then shut down & left for a while...very hard to start again. Cleaned glowplug connections & re-tightened. Bled filter, then pump, then lines to injectors. Line closest to firewall seemed to have air. Is there something else I can check that may be causing fuel to leak down? Solenoid?

First question. Is the exhaust smoking at a good pace? If so try placing an ohm meter on each of the glow plugs but first you must remove the buss bar. Use a digital because your spec. is around one ohm. If they are fine I would try replacing the fuel filter and then check the valve lash on the rocker arms.

If you have an air leak in the fuel system the only easy way is to put in clear fuel lines where ever possible I.E. return and supply to determine ar which point the air is being introduced to the system.
