The fuel filter under the tank is impossible to assemble with the original "O" ring which looks new. Do these rings swell up and grow?

The New paper element I got from my dealer for the under-hood filter will not fit into the bowl because it is very slightly wider than the factory one.
Can I replace one or both of these with filters from VW Rabbits or other popular diesel cars?
Comments?

Nevin,
STOPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!
That is not the actual fuel filter but a course pre-filter and water trap.
This screen inside the bowl is washable and not need replaceing till it is damaged or worn out.
Just clean out the bowl with a soft rag and then blow out the filter with compressed air or wash with mineral spirits.
The fuel filter you will find up front on the right side.
Consult your owners manual or dealer for more info.
As far as the O-ring it should compress when the nut on the bowl is tightened and create a tight seal.
If it aint leakin' when the fuel is turned back on then it is probably sealed.
Mr. Kioti-Century dealer
ps.
I like your page, can I link it to my site?
We are moveing to another ISP and overhauling it right now but should be up and running soon.

You may link to my site or pages:
http://www.wood-workers.com/users/1handyman/

The filter problem is that the nut will not tighten, but keeps slipping by hand, as though the "O" ring is too thick. (under the tank)

AND
the filter under the hood:
The Century element that the dealer sold me is too wide to fit into the bowl without forcing it.

Thanks for the reply,
Nevin
