Hi,
I've been given a 50th birthday present of a digger-driving course. I have no experience of this.
My question is: are the excavator controls for a 180 degree slew arm digger (eg JCB) pretty much the same as for a 360 degree tracked digger?

If I do the course on one type, will it be easy to translate to the other?

Regards,

William

They can be EXACTLY the same or they can be totally opposite. It depends on the control pattern that the machine is set up with. Today's machines are built to accomodate each operator's preference and it just takes a few changes to reconfigure the control pattern. I have seen two identical machines have totally opposite controls. Once you get use to a certain pattern it takes practice and patience to go to a different one. Safety also becomes an issue. When I have to go to a different machine that I'm not use to I go slow and tell everyone to stand back. Like everything else the more time you spend on each type the easier it is to switch around. Of course though if you just stay with the same one all the time that is even better. Hope this helps. Good Luck and Have Fun. You would probably have more responses posting this in the crawler section of YT Mag.

Digger--backhoe or a trackhoe? I run one only two or 3 times a year so control location doesn't matter that much every time it's on a different machine, concentrate on basics-- pulling a grade in the bottom of the ditch, dumping dirt in a uniform pile at the side while using the side of the bucket to push what you dumped the scoop before further out. Watching out for basics like not smashing hoses on stabalizers because you didnt pick them up all the way, turning and tracking backwards on the turn table so the back up horn doesn't deafen you! HAVE FUN!
