I’m considering buying a 35-40hp compact tractor. I can take advantage of the 4wd on much of my land. I’ve focused mostly on the Korean makes, Branson/Century, Mahindra and Tafe - mostly because of price. Kioti is a bit more expensive - closer to the Japanese makes. I’ve been looking at factory specs but don’t have much in the way of testimonals.

The Branson 4520 (Century 3045) boasts a 4cyl Yanmar with 45hp (40 pto hp). BransonKiotitractors.com offers this machine for $14,375. A local century/branson dealer said it was around $16K.

The Branson 4020 (Century 3040) has a 3 cyl Turbo Kukje with 40 hp (36pto hp). BransonKiotitractors.com offers this machine for $12,550. A local century dealer said it was around $14K. I don’t have any experience with turbos and this concerns me a bit. (The turbo apparently adds 5 hp to the Branson 3520/Century 3045, which costs $11960 or 12500 respectively from the two sources mentioned).

The Branson/Century tractors have a live pto and dual clutch. They have a min mph of 1.2mph with a 12x12 sync. shuttle.

The Mahindra 4110 has a 41hp 4cyl with 33.6 pto hp. My local mahindra dealer’s asking price is $14,300.

The Mahindra 3510 has a 35 hp 3cyl with 28.7 pto hp. My local mahindra dealer’s asking price is $11,050.

The mahindras have 12x12 shuttle with an independent pto.

I’ve not actually gone to a dealer to look at a Tafe. I’ve only looked at them on the internet. The only one that meets my general criteria is the 3600 with the 12x12 shuttle (min. .5 mph). The 3600 has a 36hp 4 cyl mitsubishi, 33 pto hp and an independent pto. It’s 600 to 900 lbs lighter than the above makes. The only price I’ve seen is 13,900.

These are the tractors I’m considering. What I’d like to do with one of them is cut grass on about 25-30 acres twice per year, cut grass on about 15 acres 3-4 times per year, do some landscaping around the house (I’ll get a loader), and lightly disk and broadcast rye grass on the 25-30 acres once per year.

If anyone has any experience with any of these tractors or another that I’m overlooking, let me know.

I was thinking that the Branson/Century tractors seemed the most substantial. However, I noted a couple of older posts that gave me some pause on these makes. There was a relatively new branson that broke in half at a railroad yard or some such. Branson stated that it was due to abuse - something about chains on the loader frame. It doesnt seem that an attached loader should be able to break a tractor in half though. Also, I seem to recall a post about someone who managed to break his bellhousing - the factory/dealer fixed it.

Any thoughts appreciated. Also, I’m very interested in actual prices paid or any info on mark-up, etc.

Thanks,

Rodney G. Tidwell

The price I had on the Mahindra 3510 was $12,900, not $11050. $11050 was on the Branson 3510. Sorry. Rodney

Mahindra tractors are made in India. Seem to have good reputation, but I do not recall ever seeing one except in photos.

Rodney, I can't offer much in the way of help since I, like you, have only looked at specs and $$, which certainly make them attractive compared to the "big three."

That said, another brand to consider would be the Long LandTrac series. They are Korean built with Mitsubishi engines. Not sure where they come in on price tho'.

Rodney I have a M F 1250 that is made by the same people that make mahindras. It;s a good little tractor. Only wished it rode a little better. Ronnie.

The MF 1250 is not made by the same people as the Mahindra. It is made by Iseki in Japan.

Thanks Jerry I guess I don't know who builds the mahindras but I looked at one about 3 weeks ago and it's just like the 1250 on the way the gears and lift leavers and steering and shuttle are. If you get a chance look at one let me know what you think. Ronnie

Ronnie,
Woodbeef is right. Everything or almost everything from the engine back is supplied by Iseki.

The rear 1/2 of the TYM built tractors are from Iseki.
