As long as the rod bolts look good, there's no need to replace them. I worked at a cummins dealership for about 4 years and rarely if ever replaced a rod bolt. I work at a Deere place now, and we replace every rod bolt we come across. I don't think it's neccesary, though- I think Mother Deere just wants to sell parts.
