Re: WASTEGATEPosted by Bob on January 18, 2005 at 10:27:38 from (66.163.134.177): In Reply to: WASTEGATE posted by orela on January 18, 2005 at 03:04:52: A "wastegate" on a turbo is a valve that will open when a certain amount of "boost" is produced by the compressor section of the turbo. When the "wastegate" begins to open, hot exhaust gas is allowed to bypass around the turbo, instead of exiting through the turbine section of the turbocharger. This limits boost pressure to a safe level. On some systems, the wastegate is controlled by a simple spring that allows the gate to begin to open at a certain exhaust pressure. A more sophisticated system uses a diaphragm connected to the wastgate, and the position of the diaphragm is controlled by boost pressure acting on one side of the diaphragm, and spring pressure acting against the other side. Still more sophisticated systems use the engine management computer to control the wastegate actuator.
