It is a round metal disk located under the mower. The disk is part of the blade assembly and it's purpose is to help prevent damage to the mower or tractor in the event one runs over a stump, big rock or other unseen object while mowing. The edges of the metal disk (stump-jumper) are curved upward to help guide the blades up and over the stump.
