Like the previous post, a stump jumper is the disc that the mower knives are attached to. The disc provides a convenient means of attaching the knives while at the same time providing protection to the mower's spindle and gearbox in case it encounters a stump. If the mower had a solid bar that the knives attached to or was set up with a large single blade (think of an over-sized push mower) encounters with stumps or other solid objects would throw tremendous and maybe damaging forces onto the spindle and gearbox. How many push mowers end up with bent engine cranks after they've hit something solid? A disc would have a tendency to skid of off or ride over an object.
