I have a 91 f250 7.3 liter diesel truck, and I had a similar problem. Turns out I "sucked a valve" and was only running on 7 cylinders. Had to take apart my engine, but haven't had any problems since. Funny that it wasn't more noticeable than it was but it did give me some problems in the morning on the 1st starts.
