The main difference for me as a part timer over if I was full-timing is that I run more rolling stock. Becasue of the need "to make hay while the sun shines" I'm running 5 tractors whereas I really only need 2 (and 2 with loaders). As we have two farms 8 miles apart it seems that we need 2 of everything. Two roll balers (NH 650's), two rakes(NH 256's), 3 mowers(NI 8' disc, Bush Hog GMH800 disc, NH 474 haybine, sickle). As we only square bale on one farm we just have 1 square baler JD 336, 1-15' NI tedder, and 1 bale wagon NH 1034 stackliner. Equipment for no time critical jobs 15' Bushhog 2615L, manure spreader, 3 flat wagons. We total 635 acres even mix of beef cattle, horses (Saddlebreds and Thoroughbreds), alfalfa (cash hay), and timothy (cash hay), plus hay for the horses and cows and a little tobacco. Usually I've got to work and cut the alfalfa in may then take June off and cut the Timothy plus the alfalfa Jn 1 and Jy 1. I guess, like a lot of folks, I'd like to farm full time. In this location that would mean (for me) another 300-400 acres ($400,000-700,000) in debt. Renting land isn't available; 15% annual growth in residential. What I've got is paid for so I guess I'll stick with it.
