Yes, the retainer ring is very difficult to see, and thre is hardly enough space to get it out, it would be better if the threaded gland would knock further in to the cylinder. Reassembly is not as difficult, because when the cylinder is apart you can get all the crud and rust out of there that builds up where the retainer ring sits in the cylinder bore, and just flick the ring back in and a couple of knocks with a flat screwdriver with the palm of your hand will seat it back in its grove. The job will be very near impossible on the tractor, you need to get the ram in a bench vice so it its held firmly and you can see it better.
