Before seriously considering purchasing a 15 to 20 year old swather (California talk), do you have enough hay or forage to cut to justify the acquisition of a piece of equipment that is used only for a few months during the year? Having said that, as in all swathers, the hydrostatic drive is subject to failure at any time. Clean and cool oil is the main key to success for any hydraulic drive. Look at the header and drive shafts. Check for loose drive shafts, broken bearing mounts and new welds, look at the cutter bar and support. The head can wear out over time and be a real pain when you need to count on the swather. The Perkins engine is very reliable and usually starts easily. It is a New Holland and, over the last 30 years, they, in my opinion, are the best. Good luck from a California hay grower.
