I have an 88 750 too. I just checked the shop manual, and sure enough, it shows the fuel shutoff straight up. I've replaced the fuel filter every year, and always did it with the fuel shutoff lever at 90o pointing towards the radiator. (Never bothered to check the manual) Try that, and see if that cures the problem.
