Gear or Hydro?

I am looking for a 25 - 30 hp compact 4wd for some loader work and miscellaneous other. I get mixed opinions on transmission preferred. Some like the gear type, as you dont have to hold the pedal for travel, others say only the hydro will do for loader use. Last, what about the trans on something like the 790 John Deere? Too limited with no synchro feature and only 2 reverse selections?
