Nevin,
It may be the shutoff silinoid on the fuel pump or the relay that controls it.
Do you hear a "click" when the ignition is turned on?
How about a slight clicking noise or rough humm?
If not, remove the right access cover on the engine.
You will need a 12 volt circuit testor for this quick test.
On the rear side of the fuel pump you will see a round thingy about as big around as a soda can or a bit smaller and about 3 or 4 inches long.
It will have wires comeing out of it.
About 6 inches down these wires is a cannon type plug.
Unplug it. The snap is on the flat side of the plug and hard to see but it is there.
On the tractor side of this plug, comeing from the tractor under the dash, check all 3 terminals in this plug. With the ignition key in the "off" position everything should be off and not energised.
Turn the ignition key to the first position, Run, and one of the terminals should should be energised.
If that is ok, turn the ignition key to the "start" position and one of the other terminals should then be energised also.
If not the relay on the left side of the firewall is bad.
I had one of these recently with the same symptoms.
It just got harder and harder to start.
If everything is ok with this test the shutoff silinoid on the back of the fuelpump could be bad.
Also a quick fix.
Any more questions feel free to Email me.
