Ron,
When you turn on the key the "charge" light on
the dash (the one that go's out when the
alternator cuts in) must come on.
Th bulb provides a small resistance in the
circuit which is necessary for the alternator to
charge. Check the bulb isn't blown and then see if
its a wiring problem or in the switch itself.
Could be your old alternator is OK.
