not exactly, the transmission pump draws oil from the bottom of the transmission through a mesh filter. from the pump the oil flowes to the hydraulic filter. from there to the transmission shift valve cover where it is working against a pressure regulating valve that creates about 150 psi in this circuit. at that valve pressure oil is supplied to pto and hi-lo valve. since very little amount of oil should leak through the pto and hi-lo, most of the oil bypasses the pressure regulating valve and flows to the main hydraulic pump, when all high pressure consumers are in neutral, all this oil should flow through the pump, then through the reservoir, then through the oil cooler, then back to the transmission for lubrication.
this is the general idea of the flow. actually there are some valves along the circuit to by pass clogged filter, protect clogged cooler etc.
when there is a big enough leak in the 150 psi circuit, oil flowes through the leak back into the sump, pressure against the pressure regulating valve drops and the tell light comes on (after a little delay), no or little oil passes to the main pump and when the reservuir is used up, high pressure hydraulic problems begin.
