It could be a hydrostat problem such as a relief in the unit stuck open but if it will not drive then there is a splined coupler between the transmission input shaft and the hydro output shaft. This coulpler is kept centered by a snap ring. I have seen this coupler slip out of place by having the snap ring jump out of its groove or break. The end of the coupler drives on the very edge of the splines for a while then quits. In any case you have to split the tractor into about three sections to fix it.
