the 886 used a 358cu german motor and the 986 used the 436cu natural motor.
for that reason alone i would stick to the 986 model since the 358 is very hard to find parts for, and when you do they can be very costly.

also the basic drive train on the international tractors remainded the same from the 706's right up to the 3688's with very little changes, other than some wider gears & bearings
