Back in the '70's Yanmar Tractor in Japan used to export small diesel tractors to the US that are just what you are describing. I had a '77 Yanmar 135D (15 horse/4wd/diesel) that was smaller than many of today's garden tractors and was a working fool. Just got $4K for it (just about what I paid for it in '77) when I traded it in last year on a little bit bigger Yanmar with John Deere clothes. Today a lot of the smaller JD's are actually Yanmars.....they are small, tough, and last through lots of work. If you can find an old Yanmar diesel, it will cost a lot less than a new JD.
