if it's hard for the oil to flow through the filter, the filter bypass should open and drain the oil to sump. check for a stuck valve. if oil flows through the filter, pressure should be limited by the pressure regulaing valve in the transmission shift cover. check for a stuck valve. i don't know the effects of freezing water in the transmission/hydraulic oil, check for water by opening the rear drain plug. freezing water will prevent oil from coming out. water in the oil is destructive for brakes and pto clutch/brake.
