the 'flex joint' is part of the park lock mechanism. in order to shift into "park" you have to shift the right lever into a gear and then pull the left lever to the left against the 'flex' spring and forward into "park". the spring will move the lever to the right into a locked position that will prevent accidental neutral shifting. when shifting out of "park", again you pull the lever to the left against the spring and then to the back to neutral.
if you can get an operators manual for this tractor, you may learn a lot more important and interesting stuff.
