As was described the flex joint is for the park. The late model 2640s used a different trans. setup, they did not have a park position used a hand brake instead. One of the problems with the flex type that I run into is the "can" on the gearshift that makes up the flex joint uses a rubber bushing arrangement to make the spring action. The rubber in them deterorates over time and makes the shift handle "sloppy". Very annoying. I don't think the shift lever can be rebult, but it can be replaced without to much difficulty. Not cheap, but I replaced mine and swore I had a totally different machine.
