Re: NEW IDEA Discbine 5209, Red or Grey?Posted by JMS/MN on February 23, 2004 at 22:37:14 from (67.27.127.222): In Reply to: NEW IDEA Discbine 5209, Red or Grey? posted by Kent in NB on February 23, 2004 at 05:31:01:
My 5209 was a '90, gray machine. Year or two later had the updated frame and slip clutch. Updated frame had the rectangular cross tube welded inside and out to it's support- not just the outside. Slip clutch was an extra disk thick, maybe heavier pto driveline? I disassembled the frame from the rest when it cracked, rebuilt the cracked area, and added frame and gussets. Newer machines had heavier, more protected gearboxes under the turtlebacks. I've replaced 2-3 gearboxes with the newer style. When you hit a severe rock with the original ones, the top assembly comes off when the hollow hex bolts shear or pull out, and the gearbox threads are destroyed. With the newer ones the top is held on with hex head bolts, and the extra cast lip protects from shearing. Top casting is also made differently, but you can modify them with a grinder and some lathe work, and reuse them with the new gearbox. If the top casting flies off and you chip the gear in that assembly, it's about $170 for a replacement. Do the annual maintenance of the cutterheads- check shims and refill with lube. Don't want to run them dry.
