Re: Need advice on whether or not to buy skid steePosted by JMS/MN on May 11, 2004 at 12:17:48 from (4.142.219.178): In Reply to: Need advice on whether or not to buy skid steer posted by Mike on May 11, 2004 at 11:56:32:
In Dec 98 I bought a Gehl 4625SX for $12,500 with 1700 hrs on it. Most dependable machine I've bought for a long time. Has 3200 hrs now, only a couple of minor repairs. Especially handy in 2000 when I broke my ankle- could get in with crutches and scoot all over the farm, checking on chores, still pick rocks, etc. Working on trading up to the 35 Series with the universal mounting plate. Mine is worth about $8500 now. The universal plate lets you mount any brand of attachment. Decide if you want hand or hand and foot controls. You need a remote (like the SX has) for hydraulic tools. Similar brands have the same options and are very dependable. Melroe is the most popular, but I like the hand controls on mine. I think Melroe offers them as an option. It is all about what you like and get used to. I like my feet solid on the platform rather than running a control. Considering renting it out- consider who operates it and how they'll take care of it. I would consider doing custom work with it, rather than renting out the machine. Keeps your guy employed, and the same operator on it. Especially lucrative is the landscaping business- might be a good sideline for you. To establish how much you can use one- you could rent or lease one to see how useful it is. You'll likely buy it.
