Whew! Where to start?
"live" is a generic term for PTOs that keep working when you stop motion of the tractor. Independent PTO has it's own clutch and is unaffected by the main clutch (Oliver, Cockshutt, IH-MTA and later, some JD). There's also continuous PTO which operates through a two stage clutch and can be stopped by pushing the clutch pedal all the way down (JD, MF, Ford, some others)or disengaging a hand clutch (AC, MH, MM, M&W clutch). Ground speed PTO is used for pto hay rakes, and other equipment requiring synchronization with motion. 1000 rpm pto can carry twice the HP of the same size shaft at 540 rpm. It's for heavy load, high HP machines. Any live or independent pto adds complexity to the tractor, but it's a good trade off in utility. Sorry for the long post, hope it helped. Karl
