I own a JD 2630 (72 HP) tractor that would get hot when I would mow using a 10 foot shredder. Freinds told me that shouldn't happen since tractor cooling is usually oversized two or three times to account for debris clogging the airflow. I don't know the temperatures since my tractor's temp gauge is color coded without numbers, but I suspect normal operating temp is 180 degrees. It is probably about 280 when it touches yellow.

My tractor would heat up after running for thirty minutes under load so I would have to stop and idle to cool off. A few years ago, I replaced the water pump and had the radiator cleaned. It started getting hot a couple of years later and I flushed the radiator, but nothing helped. A friend told me that I needed to have the radiator rodded otherwise the junk clogs the tubes. Since the radiator was old and rodding is a big job, I decided to replace the old radiator with a new one.

I ordered one from tractor-radiator.com and it was delivered in about three days. The price was about half what JD will charge. Replacing these radiators is a big job since JD hoods are a chore to remove and the attachments between the radiator and oil cooler are hard to reach. The after market radiator was okay, but some tolerances are off and you may need some creativity getting it installed.

Once I got it back together and went and mowed, the temp gauge hit the lower operating mark and never budged. Problem solved. I had the same trouble with an old dump truck and a new radiator fixed it also.

One other thing to note. It is imperative to either change anti-freeze or add anti-rust to the cooling on a yearly basis. These tractors have sleeves in the cylinders and they will corrode if the anti-freeze is not kept fresh.
