JD 2240 (MFWD) Four Wheel drive won't dis-engage

JD 2240 Four wheel drive will not dis-engage when the dash selector is off.
My service book doesn't discuss the four wheel drive troubleshooting/repair. It only states that "in case of electrical failure, the four wheel will default to engaged, even if the selector is turned off ".
What sort of acuator or switch should I look for other than the dash (rocker).
I have discovered a 2"x4" plastic encased unit mounted just aft of the clutch/transmission housing. It has an electrical pin protruding, but no loose wires evident.
Any help is appreciated. My 4 wheel use is limited, and I don' need the extra wear and tear
