i am not familiar with 2240, but usually on jd mfwd on older utility tractors, when you put the mfwd switch in 'off' position with the key switch on,you should have system voltage at the mfwd solenoid. check for voltage at the solenoid in these conditions with a test light. if you get voltage, check for magnetism at the end of the solenoid with a small screwdrever or other light iron piece.
if there is no woltage you should check the switch, the fuses and the wiring.
if you get voltage but not magnetism,and after you make sure you get proper ground at the other solenoid termial, your solenoid is shot.
if you do get magnetism an stiil no disengagement, there is either a problem with the valve (check the pressure st the test port) or a problem within the mfwd clutch.
