Bush Hog makes a great mower. They have started making several "lesser" models to go along with the heavy duty line.
Woods, Rhino, and a host of others make "good" to "better" models also.
If you're going to cut (only) light grass and weeds, you can go with about any brand, and their light duty models. If you're going to mow heavy weeds and brush, but not all that often, you can go with what most companies refer to as "medium duty". If you're planning on doing big acreage, heavy brush, or full-time farm use, go with the heavy duty line.
In addition to farming, I run a couple tractors almost fulltime, during the summer, duing bush hogging for several commercial real estate agents. I'll log about 400 hours on one tractor this year. I run a Woods BB840 behind a Deere 2440 (60 HP) By doing inner-city lots, I end up hitting car rims, bicycle frames, old lumber, rocks, concrete blocks, you name it....
The Woods mower has held up better than anything I've used in years.
I will say that a heavy duty Bush Hog brand mower is as good as it gets. The Woods mower will line up stride for stride with the Bush Hog.
Lots of good brands....Lots of bad ones too
Price shop if you can. I found that three different dealers were as much as $800 off, on the same exact mower.
Look for high horsepower rating on gearbox and driveline. Make sure it comes with a "stump-jumper". Not all do. With the heavy duty comes heavy wieght. My 7 foot Woods is around 1800lbs. I have a medium duty, 6 footer, that wieghs in at around 1000lbs. Big difference. John
