Although not relevent to Alaska here is how it is done in MD. Most ag inputs and machinery for bonified production expenses are purchased tax free in MD. Dealers usually have a form you can sign or the Comptrollers Office has a form. Lawn mowers, ATVs, tools, and additions to real estate are always taxable regardless of who purchases them. To make purchases in PA I've signed the PA tax exempt form with each of my suppliers. DE is sales tax free but if you have your purchase delivered to MD they have to charge MD sales tax. If you are buying the tractor in a state which isn't tax free maybe you can have it delivered to your state or one that is. A MD based construction equipment auction company will only waive MD tax if you have a dealers license for resale or have the equipment hauled to another state by a third party hauler. Contact the taxing authority in each state involved to get the facts. I've found dealers to be reluctant to give the tax break if they don't know the buyer or the not sure of the use. He're's the MD Comptrollers website. You figure out the logic. http://business.marylandtaxes.com/taxinfo/salesanduse/agriexemption/default.asp
